Welcome – supporting your professional success and personal fulfilment
Welcome to SUCCESS-4-ME Coach-Mentoring for ‘SEEKERS OF SUCCESSFUL CHANGE’ ie those of you looking for ways in which you can become more successful in your professional and business performance, in leadership, in managing teams, in dealing with challenging change, or in wanting a better life for yourself and your family.
This is all about your route to success and happiness.
But first let me be clear: I am not a ‘Happiness-Guru’.
I think that life is far more complicated than living life, as historian Simon Sharma recently put it, either with ‘fatuous optimism’ or in ‘helpless despair’.
The truth is that as complex human beings living ever more complex and stressful lives, we can feel both these extremes in the same week, the same day, or within the same hour even! The trouble is, we often define ourselves by our problems, our weaknesses, our worries and our pain. But there is another way: by focussing on our strengths, our possibilities and our huge capacities for learning new thoughts, feelings, behaviours and skills… we can access a more fulfilling life, and even dare I say it… have FABULOUS FUN whilst also being more professionally and personally effective.
I am in the business of coach-mentoring people who wish to develop more control over their lives and careers, and over the degree of personal and professional success they achieve. This means helping them gain a better understanding of the context in which they operate, their relationships with others, and their own interpretations, feelings and behaviours. And from there to utilise for the better, the actions and habits that can set them on the road to success, and a more fulfilled life.
I also believe that we cannot be wholly explained by our genetic inheritance, by our upbringing, background or our present circumstances. Neither are we fully explained by our gender, our ethnicity, our faith or our class or profession. I don’t believe in pre-ordained outcomes or fate, but I do believe that we can make better-informed CHOICES, and by so doing can be so much more than just ‘flotsam or jetsam on the shores of life’.
For most of us life is about surviving and if we do sometimes achieve success, it can be under sometimes extremely trying circumstances. Like millions of others, I’ve been in situations when I’ve needed to share my concerns and my hopes with someone who was both expert and trustworthy, but more importantly someone non-judgmental and empathetic to my circumstances and what I wanted to achieve, no matter how outlandish!
Things haven’t always run smoothly in my life. I spent my first 15 years in care homes, a challenging and sometimes difficult experience. And then I was pregnant and married at 16 and separated at 28, a single parent struggling to survive as a chambermaid and office cleaner.
Things really started to motor for me when I decided to become the agent of my own change. It began to dawn on me that if I wanted my life to change for the better, then I needed to break out and completely rethink my future and my aspirations. Up to then, I had been trapped by not only the experiences of my upbringing but also by the limited expectations others had of me because of my background, my race, and my immediate circumstances.
I then met a couple of people who mentored me informally, one of whom was a trusted college lecturer who saw a spark in me… followed by a university registrar who smoothed my path to taking up my degree studies. Both wonderful individuals gave me the hope and courage I needed to continue my journey. The rest, as they say, is history.
All through my challenging journey from single parent and village cleaning lady to running my own business and holding ministerial public appointments, people from all walks of life have been asking me the same sorts of questions about their own hopes and fears:
- How can I get some ‘me-time’ to think things through, without dropping the ball on seemingly all-consuming day-to-day priorities?
- How can I start to make the transition to a more successful life?
- How can I better understand what motivates me, and what I am capable of?
- What makes my team tick, and how can I have more influence with my team, my peers and my manager?
- How can I make my life less stressful, more productive and more fulfilling?
- How can I make money doing something I really love, rather than something if I’m honest with myself, I hate doing?
- How can I develop the confidence to start a new life / new business?
- Where can I go to get the help and support I need, without fear of criticism or scepticism?
- How can I better manage my private life with my working ambitions and my career?
- Is this all there is?
- There is more than this, but I can’t quite put my finger on what, or even when?
- I feel the need for massive change, but how do I know when and where to start?
- How can I maintain the support of my family and friends if I ‘change’?
- Kiki, how did you become successful and what can I learn from your journey?
Ever since embarking on my own transition years ago, I’ve been asked to support a whole bunch of diverse people on the basis that ‘if someone like me could achieve what I have, then there’s hope for significant improvement in them!’ [click here to find out more about Kiki’s background]
These ‘seekers of successFUL CHANGE’ range from ordinary men and women wanting to embark on a career or even like me in years ago, just wanting to ‘get an education’; people wanting an opportunity to make money on their own account rather than stay in low-paid employment; team leaders wanting to become much more effective; business owners needing ‘time out’ space to review their business performance; senior career women wanting to improve their leadership skills; non-execs wanting to enhance their impact and influence on Boards, to people just wanting to improve their edge in competitive sports.
I wonder whether there’s ever been a better time for you to ask yourself: “How can I achieve success-4-me? Who’s on MY team, dedicated to supporting me make the changes I need in order to fulfil my goals?”
